Review
Everything that could go right did Tuesday at the Bay Area Playwrights Festival production of Laura Harrington's "Night Luster."

The author, a member of New Dramatists in New York, has written a compelling play - about a call girl named Mink, who, almost against her will, falls in love with one of her clients.

With great sensitivity, director Alma Becker has gotten everything out of the text - and the unspoken drama behind the words as well. And holding the entire 75-minute production together is a brilliant performance by Ellen McLaughlin as Mink.
This is one of those rare instances where the long-sought new "voice" is apparent. Harrington's use of language is original - Mink primps for "the shine of the street," her boyfriend Sharkey complains that when people see his scarred face they "read ugly." The author's ability to create emotion-charged scenes with a minimum of words is remarkable...

McLaughlin's Mink is done superbly, making the viewer want to know more about both the character and the actress - no mean feat.  Mink has a silky-smooth voice that barely emerges from the clenched jaws of a confirmed cynic. Mink herself hardly can believe that she's falling in love, and she's ready to "go deep" with Joey, until her own problems get in the way. (McLaughlin also created the bluesy, jazzy tunes the characters sing from time to time.)

No doubt, this play will make its way into that full production later. For those who want to see it at an early stage, still red-hot from the playwright's forge, it has two more performances at the festival.
